What is the purpose of the IPR certification?
The International Paramedic Registry collaborates with local, state, national and international stakeholders to:
- Develop and review model standards for the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to the practice of paramedicine (prehospital care).
- Identify candidate eligibility.
- Develop and maintain certification exams to verify initial competency of prehospital providers.
- Develop and maintain standards for continued competency.
- Assist the development of the profession.
- Maintain a registry of certified prehospital providers.
The International Paramedic Registry does NOT play an active role in the following:
- Evaluate job performance.
- Establish scope of practice.
- Punish or investigate malpractice.
- License providers or authorize practice
Will I know my exact score?
- Cognitive exam: No. The IPR cognitive examination is a criterion referenced examination and has a predetermined cut score or a pass/fail point. Exam results will be shared individually with each candidate on the day of the exam.
Does the IPR offer a course to prepare me for the exam?
No. The IPR offers valid exams, and therefore cannot conduct or endorse any exam preparation course.

A fully authorized candidate must purchase exam access through an authorized provider and/or directly at the Exam Site. Purchasing details are determined by the Exam Site. Review the site-specific costs here.
IMPORTANT: IPR is not responsible for any administrative/operational cost increases determined by Testing Sites, which may or may not raise the final cost for IPR candidates.

What are the requirements to take the IPR-R exam?
The Certified First Responder Exam comprises 50-70 scored items, with candidates given 1.5 hours to complete the test. Also referred to as Emergency Medical Responder, First Responder, or Rescuer, individuals at this level have undergone approximately 40 to 200 hours of prehospital care training. The certification is tailored to assess the knowledge and skills of individuals at the first responder level, focusing on their ability to effectively respond to medical emergencies and provide initial care. How can I apply to renew my expiring credential?
Providers registered with the International Paramedic Registry (IPR) must renew their certification every two years. To apply for recertification, the following steps are required:
a. Demonstrate competency through participation in continuing education or by retaking the exam.
b. Complete the online form and pay the fee.

How do I recertify if my certification has expired?
You must retake the certification exam.
If I pass the exam, how long will the certification be valid?
IPR certifications are valid for two years. Options for certification renewal include retaking the exam or renewing through continuing education.
- With an active certification: Providers wishing to begin their recertification process can do so 180 calendar days before the expiration date and up to a maximum of 6 months after the expiration date.
- With an expired certification: After 6 months, the recertification candidate must start the certification process again.

How often is the exam updated?
IPR exams are constantly updated with new questions and content. All exam forms follow a standardized test development process.
Are current American Heart Association standards used in the exam?
Yes. Candidates are expected to maintain significant knowledge of current ACLS, PALS, NRP, and ITLS/PHTLS standards.
If I fail the exam, how many times can I retake it?
