ADVANCED LEVEL CERTIFICATION
The Advanced Level Prehospital Care Provider exam comprises 125-150 scored items, with candidates allotted 3 hours to complete the test. This level is for candidates with over 1000 hours of training. Also known as Advanced Life Support Provider or Paramedic (USA, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom), Technologist (Colombia), Técnico Superior Universitario or TSU (Mexico), this level requires advanced skills in assessing and treating complex medical conditions. This Provider is a health professional whose primary focus is to respond to, assess, and triage emergent, urgent, and non-urgent requests for medical care, apply basic and advanced knowledge and skills necessary to determine patient physiologic, psychological, and psychosocial needs, administer medications, interpret and use diagnostic findings to implement treatment, provide complex patient care, and facilitate referrals and/or access to a higher level of care when the needs of the patient exceeds the capability level of the advanced prehospital providers.
Examples of additional knowledge and skills needed beyond the basic certification requirements are described below:
- Can interpret ECGs, administer medications, and perform advanced airway maneuvers like endotracheal intubation and needle thoracostomy. They are proficient in Advanced Medical (AMLS) and Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).
Completion of the Exam signals readiness to provide advanced prehospital care, improving patient outcomes in challenging emergencies.
