BASIC LEVEL CERTIFICATION
The Basic Level Prehospital Care Provider exam comprises 120-135 scored items, with candidates allotted 3 hours to complete the test. This level, commonly known as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT: USA), Auxiliary Prehospital Nurse (Colombia), Basic Prehospital Care Provider, or Ambulance Officer (Australia), Paramedic Assistant or Attendant, requires candidates to have completed approximately 200 to 1000 hours of prehospital care training. Candidates at this level are expected to possess a broad range of knowledge and skills beyond those required for first responder certification. They should demonstrate proficiency in basic patient assessment and management, including intravenous fluid therapy and limited medication administration (such as epinephrine administration in anaphylaxis, aspirin, and nitroglycerin in cardiac cases).
Additionally, candidates must have fundamental knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, along with primary and secondary assessment skills. They should be able to formulate a general impression (presumptive differential diagnosis) and develop an appropriate care plan. Proficiency in the assessment and treatment of various medical, cardiac, traumatic, behavioral, obstetrical, gynecological, neonatal, and pediatric emergencies is also essential at this level. Successful completion of the Exam indicates readiness to provide essential prehospital care interventions and support in diverse emergency situations.
